The Art of the Clue

A great crossword clue does more than define a word. It surprises, misdirects, and rewards the solver with an "aha!" moment.

The Three Pillars

  1. Accuracy - The clue must be factually correct and fair. A solver who knows the answer should be able to confirm it with confidence.

  2. Misdirection - The best clues point you in the wrong direction before the penny drops. "Plant in the garden" for ASTER uses the verb reading of "plant" to misdirect.

  3. Economy - Every word should earn its place. Padding weakens a clue. Compare "Large body of water" (flat) with "Pacific, for one" (crisp).

Cryptic vs Straight

Straight (or "quick") clues rely on synonymy and misdirection. Cryptic clues add a whole extra layer - anagrams, hidden words, double definitions, and charades.

Both traditions demand craft. As crossword editor Will Shortz has said: "The best clues teach you something new."
